The CCAB is UK- and Ireland-based. But professional licensing bodies don't issue guidance in isolation. When the bodies that govern global accounting qualifications begin requiring ethical AI conduct, US and Canadian equivalents follow. California's State Bar proposed analogous AI ethics rules for lawyers in March 2026. The AICPA and CPA Canada are watching. Your state board is watching.

What the CCAB Is Actually Saying

The CCAB's April 2026 statement isn't a list of new rules. It's a reframe of existing ones.

The five fundamental principles of professional accountancy — integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality, and professional behavior — were written before AI existed. The CCAB's guidance says: apply them anyway.

Here's what that means in practice, principle by principle.

Integrity. You can't take credit for work you didn't do — or misrepresent the quality of work you supervised poorly. If AI drafted a tax memo and you signed it without meaningful review, and the memo contains an error, the integrity question isn't "did the AI make a mistake?" It's "did you represent yourself as having exercised professional judgment you didn't actually exercise?"

Objectivity. AI models have biases embedded in their training data. They can be systematically wrong in ways that aren't obvious. Objectivity requires that you recognize and disclose limitations that might affect your professional judgment — including the limitations of tools you're relying on.

Professional competence and due care. This is the most consequential principle for most small firm owners right now. Competence now includes knowing how to use AI tools appropriately. "I didn't know what it was doing" is not a defense when the standard of practice includes understanding the tools you deploy on client work.

Confidentiality. This is where the immediate legal exposure lives for most US and Canadian firms. Many AI tools — particularly free and consumer-grade tools — train on user inputs by default. Pasting a client's financial data into a tool that retains and trains on that data may be a confidentiality breach under your existing engagement terms, your professional licensing rules, and potentially applicable privacy law. The CCAB guidance makes this explicit. The engagement letter you signed with your client two years ago probably didn't contemplate AI tools.

Professional behavior. The disclosure question. When AI is involved in producing work product that a client will receive, does your client know? The CCAB guidance requires members to act in ways that comply with relevant laws and regulations — and as those laws begin to include AI disclosure requirements (NH SB 640, Oregon SB 1546, state bar guidance), professional behavior will mean disclosure as a default, not an exception.


Why US and Canadian Firms Should Act Now

The CCAB doesn't govern you. That's true. But the CCAB precedent matters for three reasons.

First, professional licensing bodies move in formation. When ICAEW moves, ACCA moves. When the UK bodies move, Commonwealth accountancy bodies watch. When Commonwealth bodies move, the AICPA and state CPA boards pay attention. The timing is not synchronized, but the direction of travel is consistent. The question is not whether US bodies will issue similar guidance. It's when.

Second, the malpractice exposure already exists. Even without explicit AI-specific licensing rules in the US, the existing competence and confidentiality standards apply. A CPA who uses AI to prepare a return and submits an AI-generated error without adequate review faces the same professional liability as one who made the error manually — the tool is not the defense. The CCAB guidance makes this explicit for UK members. US case law is already moving in the same direction, particularly in the legal profession where 487 AI hallucination instances in court filings were documented in 2025.

Third, your clients are ahead of you. Corporate clients with legal and compliance departments are already asking about AI use in professional service delivery. The in-house legal team that expects to depend less on outside counsel (64% of in-house teams, per the ACC/Everlaw survey) is the same team that will begin asking vendors and advisors to disclose AI practices. Getting ahead of this with a clear internal policy is a competitive posture, not just a risk management exercise.


Five Questions to Answer Before Your Next AI Deployment

The CCAB's guidance gives you the framework. Here are five questions that translate it into action for a 5-50 person professional services firm.

1. Which AI tools are your team actually using on client work?

Not which ones you've approved. Which ones are actually in use. The National Law Review reported that 50% of professional services employees are using AI tools their firm never approved. Before you can establish any ethical AI posture, you need an accurate inventory. Ask every person who touches client work: what AI tools have you used in the past 30 days? No judgment. Just an audit.

2. Is there a documented human review step before AI output reaches a client?

This is the practical analog to the CCAB's professional competence principle. You don't need to ban AI use. You need a clear, documented standard: AI produces drafts; a credentialed professional reviews before delivery. That review step — documented, not just assumed — is what protects you in a malpractice claim, a client dispute, or a licensing inquiry.

3. Does your AI tool retain or train on client inputs?

This is the confidentiality question, and it's the most immediate legal exposure for most US firms. Check the terms of service for every tool your team uses. Look specifically for language about training data, model improvement, or data retention. If your tool retains inputs and you have clients in jurisdictions covered by Oregon SB 1546, Washington HB 2225, or similar chatbot/data laws, you may already have a disclosure obligation.

4. Do your engagement letters address AI use?

Most don't. They were written before AI-assisted professional work was standard practice. The gap between what your engagement letters say and what your team is actually doing is your liability window. A single paragraph — describing your firm's AI use policy, requiring client disclosure, and establishing that professional review is the final step — closes much of that window. 5. Who in your firm is responsible for tracking regulatory updates?

NH SB 640 is in the New Hampshire House. Oregon SB 1546 is signed and effective January 1, 2027. Washington has two signed AI laws. The CCAB just issued its first AI ethics statement. California's State Bar is in the public comment period for COPRAC amendments. This is a moving landscape. Someone in your firm needs to own awareness — not full compliance counsel, but a designated person who reads the Transparency Coalition updates, the Troutman Privacy Blog, and the AICPA guidance as it arrives.
