For consulting firms: before any AI-assisted deliverable goes to a client, a named consultant reviewed and approved the content. Log it.

Practice 2: Update your engagement letter language.

Your engagement letter currently describes your service as human professional work. If you are now using AI tools materially in that work, your engagement letter should reflect that — both to set appropriate client expectations and to establish that AI is a tool used under your professional oversight, not a substitute for it.

A simple addition is sufficient:

"[Firm name] may use AI-assisted tools in connection with services performed under this engagement. All work product is reviewed by a licensed [attorney/CPA/consultant] before delivery and reflects the professional judgment of [firm name] personnel. Use of AI tools does not alter the professional responsibility that [firm name] assumes for its work product."

Employment counsel can review this language if you want to confirm it addresses your specific exposure profile. But most firms can add something like this to their standard engagement letter template in an afternoon.

Practice 3: Know which AI uses in your firm create the highest exposure.

Not every AI use is equal. Using AI to draft a first version of a meeting summary is low exposure. Using AI to produce a candidate shortlist, a client financial analysis, or a legal research memo is higher exposure — because the AI output directly affects a client decision or work product with professional liability attached.
